Growing up as two sisters in Lancaster County, we have such fond memories of chasing fireflies on warm June nights. But as the years went by, we noticed something sad: there were fewer and fewer of them. We eventually learned that our big, grassy backyard, which we thought was so normal, was part of the problem. We felt a need to do something about it.
That's what started our journey into native plants. We spent countless hours researching, and we quickly learned that traditional grass lawns and non-native flowers are like deserts for insects and local wildlife. They offer little to no food or shelter, and they require a lot of chemicals, water, and time to maintain.
We also learned how difficult it can be to find the right information and the right plants. It felt overwhelming at first. As Lancaster residents, we found it hard to know which plants were truly native to our area and where to even begin.
That's why we started this business. We are on a mission to make it as easy as possible to go native, so that you can avoid the same struggles we went through. Native gardens are the opposite of grass lawns—they provide a tasty meal for insects and don't need a lot of maintenance because they've spent millions of years adapting to this specific environment. We want to help you create a beautiful, low-maintenance garden that brings back the fireflies and supports a healthier community.
